Merwin K. Turner
April 15, 1935 - January 21, 2017

Rev. Merwin Key Turner, 81, passed away on January 21, 2017 at Hospice of Wichita Falls, Texas.

A memorial service will celebrate his life at Floral Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls on Saturday, January 28 at 1:30 pm.

Merwin was born near Olney, Texas to Merwin Alonso Turner and Elsie Cordia (Johnson) Turner on April 15, 1935. He was the middle of 5 children and the only son. He attended school in Vernon, Harrold, Thornberry, and graduated with the proud Class of ’53 from Wichita Falls Senior High School. While attending Midwestern, he drove the school bus from his Friberg Community to Wichita Falls, the first of many of his “unofficial” careers as a bus driver and tour guide.
He attended Midwestern State University for two years, before serving in the Air Force at Sheppard AFB as an instructor in the Intelligence School. He completed his undergraduate degree at Texas Wesleyan College in Fort Worth, TX in 1960. He entered ministry in the Methodist Church in 1961 and completed his course of study to become an ordained elder in the Methodist Church in 1964.

He married Catharine Virginia Jenne in 1955. They are the proud parents of 4 children, and influenced many children, youth, and families through their work in the church and schools where they served. Merwin served United Methodist churches in Irving, Bonham, Burkburnett, Bryson, Jermyn, Perrin, Antelope, Archer City, Bowie, Electra, Nocona; and Floral Heights, University and St. Marks in Wichita Falls. The majority of his ministry was in the Wichita Falls District, earning him the title of “Pastor Emeritus of the Wichita Falls District.” He retired from full time ministry after 40 years and continued on for another 15 years in interim and part-time ministry. The family gives thanks for all who have helped shape his life and ministry.
His hobbies included maintaining and tinkering with vehicles and buses which he occasionally transformed into campers, driving and touring with groups, camping, traveling, sports, attending children’s and grandchildren’s events, and interest in new advances and technology. Merwin was an innovative leader in PTA, Boy Scouts, Lions Club, booster clubs, the Rockin’ Wheels Good Sam Chapter, and Merry Mobile Methodists; he served on many church and civic boards and agencies including the Red River Emmaus Community and the Floral Heights Community Food Pantry Board.

Merwin entertained groups of all ages with his popular apple trick, infamous “Bear Hunt,” “Spoonerisms,” “Little Nell” skit, made up song lyrics, and his delightful histories. He touched many lives and is remembered through his legacies of service to the Church and the communities he loved. He delighted in the education and the service of his children, grandchildren and their spouses. He is a revered mentor of many who continue to serve in various positions and responsibilities in the United Methodist Church and in their communities.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters Ruth Eloise Chester, Peggy Turner, and Mary Catherine Turner Allen.

He is survived by his wife “Ginny” of nearly 62 years; his four children, Rev. Elizabeth Turner Talbert and husband Dr. Tom Talbert of Wichita Falls, David Turner and wife Paula of New Boston, Cynthia Turner Medley and husband Rev. Tom Medley of Wichita Falls, and Stephen Turner and wife Lisa of Dallas; sister Jeanette Turner Sitz and husband Gerry Sitz, of Denton; sister-in-laws Betty Freeman and Frances Jenne of Wichita Falls; brother-in-law Clay Chester of Fort Worth; nine grandchildren, Scott Talbert and wife Angie, Jenni Medley, Alan Talbert and wife Alison, Catie Talbert Haveman and husband Michael, Sarah Medley Dale and husband Kaleb, Josh Turner and wife Haley, Lindsay Turner Cothrum and husband Corey, Stephanie Turner, and Jon Turner. He is blessed with 5 great-grandchildren, Miles and Sydney Talbert, Logan Turner, Luke Haveman, and Adley Dale. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Staff of Hospice of Wichita Falls who provided a ministry of service and presence in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the Floral Heights Community Food Pantry, Hospice of Wichita Falls, or to your local church.
